When buying boards, you spend a lot of time researching environmental grades, substrate types, patterns and textures, but you most likely overlook one thing - edge banding.

In fact, edge sealing is the key to determining how long the board can last. Many cabinets have problems after two or three years of use, not because the boards themselves are not good, but because the edges have collapsed first.

What exactly is border sealing preventing?

Three things: waterproof, moisture-proof, and formaldehyde locking. The interior of the substrate of the board is like a sponge, and once water vapor seeps in from the edges, it will expand, mold, and layer. And a large part of formaldehyde release comes from the cross-section and gaps. Edge sealing is to put a layer of armor on the board and block all exits.

But border sealing is also divided into three, six, and nine levels.

The most common method is EVA hot melt adhesive edge sealing, which has low cost and fast speed, and is used by almost all factories. The problem is that EVA adhesive will soften when exposed to heat, and over time it will turn yellow, crack, and peel off. Take a closer look at the edges of the cabinets that have been used for two or three years at home. If there is a thin black or white line, it is a sign of aging on the EVA edge.

A better option is PUR edge sealing, which uses moisture curing reactive adhesive with stronger adhesion, high temperature resistance, and less susceptibility to cracking. Further up is laser edge sealing, which uses laser to melt the edge sealing tape and board into one, almost seamless, with top-notch aesthetics and durability. But the cost of laser edge sealing is high, and many brands only use it on high-end series.

How to determine if the edge banding is good or not?

No need for any tools, just use your hands. Touch the edge of the board, if it is smooth without burrs, glue overflow, or gaps, it is basically qualified. If you can see obvious glue lines, or if you can scratch the edges with your nails, it indicates that the edge sealing process is very ordinary. If you can easily break open the edge of the board by applying more force, then the edge of this board is basically unreliable.

One sentence: The face of the board is the color, the lining is the substrate, but the life is given by the edge banding. When choosing boards, it's better to have slightly different colors than to save money on edge banding.
